EQUINE SPORTS THERAPY
The definition of 'therapy' is a "treatment intended to relieve or heal" (Oxford, n.d.). Equine Sports Therapy uses a variety of techniques to help relieve pain, increase circulation and range of motion as well as improve stamina. All aspects aim to improve the welfare of horses while improving their overall performance.
Routine massages are a really good way to help improve circulation, enhance muscle tone, improve joint mobility, increase range of movement, promote healing and release natural pain reliving endorphins. It’s also a great way to relax your horse!
Myofascial release is a massage technique that works by applying pressure onto the myofascial connective tissue also known as fascia to release and relax the tissue. Myofascial connective tissue is found all around the horse’s body and often acts as a shock absorber throughout their body. If the tissue withstands trauma, then it can become tight and painful for the horse. Myofascial release can be included into a routine massage.
Kinesiology tape is extremely effective for supporting, correcting and healing. It can be used on both the horse and the rider. The tape relieves pressure from the muscles by slightly lifting the skin up. You can see a positive difference from the moment the tape is applied.
Whilst completing my degree I conducted a study investigating the effects of RockTape (a kinesiology tape brand) on hindlimb range of motion in trot. This study concluded that RockTape has a positive effect on hindlimb stride length and can statistically significantly increase the horse's stride length during the trot. The idea behind using kinesiology tape for performance boosting derived from the idea that when the tape is placed on numerous occasions, the horse will then begin using muscle memory to enhance its performance.
Thus, when the tape is removed the horse will engage their muscle memory to have the same performance-boosting abilities.
A trigger point is a tight area within the muscle. Using trigger point massage therapy during a session can help relieve certain areas of pain. The pain can often be significantly reduced even after one session, however, a larger trigger point often requires a second visit. Regular trigger point therapy can reduce the possibility of a long-term injury and damage to the musculature of the horse.
For horses recovering from injuries, beginning training for the upcoming competition season or looking to increase condition, tailored rehabilitation plans can be created focusing on the needs and abilities of your horse. These will be created alongside the owner, ensuring the best for the owner and horse. Making sure the rehabilitation works with the owner's schedule and gives a realistic time frame for recovery.
DRY CUPPING THERAPY
Dry Cupping Therapy uses suction to relieve pressure of deep tissues. This relieved pressure helps to increase circulation, therefore reducing tension, spasms and pain. Research shows cupping therapy can also increase range of motion. I am a qualified human dry cupping therapist, but have adapted the techniques and placements to work effectively on equines. This technique offers a deep tissue massage without compressing the tissues.
